Hawaii Five-O Recs
Here, for the perusing pleasure of my dear friend, OCDindeed, are a few fics to get started down the McDanno Rabbit Hole.

All My Guards Away by sheafrotherdon
Tag to episode 1x18, with all the heartache that implies. Now with bonus fixes. With thanks to dogeared for all her suggestions and edits. <--The one where Danny turns Matt in rather than letting im get away and convinces him to go into Witness relocation. Good emotional h/c.

All For Grace by esteefee
Written for the h50promptmeme round 1: "When Grace is kidnapped, Steve goes full-on ninja to rescue her. Maybe they can only send one person in to get her, so against all of his protective paternal instincts Danny has to trust Steve to do it, since he's the most capable. Bonus if Steve gets badly injured during all of this. Also, please don't actually hurt Grace. :(
I KNOW IT'S CLICHE AND I DON'T CARE." <-- The one where they're holding Grace in a cave up the side of a cliff so Steve goes to get her and is a big damn hero and it's a pretty great Grace-in-peril story. <3

All my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet by sirona
Lt Cmdr Steve McGarrett is the leader of SEAL Team Six. When the workers at a foreign embassy are taken hostage, his team is dispatched to neutralise the threat and get the hostages to safety. Steve thinks it's just a routine mission. He doesn't realise that rescuing a certain ex-cop and his daughter is about to change the rest of his life. <-- Steve rescues Danny and Grace and it's all very action packed and they bond. Very cute au.

Beneath the Trident by kristen999
Steve and Danny go undercover to investigate the death of a SEAL before a sensitive joint Special Forces’ operation. With Steve as the SEALs' new team leader and Danny as the reporter assigned to shadow him, Danny finally gets to see the hidden depths of the real Lt. Commander McGarrett. <-- Really good, thorough look at SEAL training and I love how Danny comes to appreciate this aspect of who Steve is. <3

Between Skin and Skin by portrait_of_a_Fool
It was a slight misunderstanding to begin with, but that's the way a lot of things start; it's what they become that's the interesting part. <--The one where Steve has a whore kink and Danny indulges it. Holy. Fucking. Hell. So. Hot.

Curving Like the Ocean Towards You by Gyzym
If it ain't broke, fix it anyway. <-- The one where Steve decided to redecorate in order to sell the house and Danny helps, but really they're just using it as an excuse to spend all their time together and because they are so emotionally constipated they don't realize it for like 15k and then they spend 5k having sex! \o/ One of my fave writers. There should be a law that says she has to write in all my fandoms.

Don't Turn Me Home Again by gyzym
After a rough day of island living, Danny wakes up in New Jersey and learns the hard way to be careful what he wishes for. <-- Another great one from Gyzym. Danny wakes up in New Jersey, still married to Rachel and the two of them are miserable. Danny misses Steve like a limb and when they finally do cross paths Steve is heartbreaking. A really good read.

Ending One Minute at a Time by gottalovev
Steve and Danny have been kidnapped. To protect Danny and buy time in hope for a rescue, Steve will have to fight with all he's got. Whatever the cost. <-- The one where Danny and Steve are kidnapped and Steve has to fight underground death matches to keep them both alive. Really great! <3

Ho'oponopono by ember_firedrake
Groundhog Day AU. Danny finds himself trapped in the same day over and over again. <-- Ok, I just really have a thing for this trope and this fic does it well.

Home is the Sailor, Home From the Sea by laceymcbain
“You know,” Danny starts, “when you said 'home,' I kind of assumed you meant you had a place here, or a boat to go back to, or you know, something other than an active crime scene.” <-- Danny takes Steve to the hotel with he and Grace and has the house cleaned up while they're gone because Steve is a sad little puppy and Danny wants to take care of him. I love Danny.

Home by cyfarwydd
Danny's life had been turned upside down ever since Steve ambled into it, carving a place for himself that Danny couldn't ignore- not that he minded. (Alternate Reality if Danny had chanced upon meeting Steve when they were 25.) <-- Danny breaks Steve out of jail when he's just a rookie and they fall in love. Steve remains a SEAL and Danny stays with the New Jersey police but they make it work. Works canon elements in nicely to end up in the same place in the end. Danny and Steve are very sweet together and still nicely in character.

How to Keep Your Mouth Shut by primetime
Danny’s sometimes gay. Gay, sometimes. Does dudes. He doesn’t know how to say it right. He doesn’t know how to say it at all. <-- The one where Danny comes out (not intentionally) to five-0 and learns to be happy. Loved this. Steve quietly pining on the sidelines is adorable.

Months and Miles From Dreams by ellievolia
That AU in which Steve is an active Navy SEAL and Danny is in New Jersey, owning a gym. <-- The one where Danny owns a Gym and Steve meets him when he's on leave and they hook up and it's pretty amazing but Steve leaves without telling Danny but then comes back on his next leave and Danny lets him in. This becomes a pattern and in between they have their own lives, which sometimes complicates things, but eventually they figure out they're really all in over this and it's slow and gorgeous and heart achey...all good things.

Moving In (to Every Single Aspect of Danny's Life, Including the Boring Bits Like Dry-Cleaning) by westgirl
It felt wrong for Steve to sound unsure of his place in Danny’s life. His place in Danny’s life was at Danny’s side, driving him slowly insane. Steve should feel secure about that. <-- In which Steve basically stealth marries Danny and it's pretty great!

Rough Patches by stellarmeadow
Three cases that shine a light on particular issues inherent in any relationship between Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams. <-- I really like this one. The team catch 3 cases in a row and Steve has issues with chairs.

This Thing of Ours (It Needs a Better Name) by leupagus
Cosa Nostra: (kō'sə nō'strə) etym: Italian n. The branch of the Mafia operating in the United States. Literally, "our thing" or "this thing of ours." <-- Really great AU with Danny, Rachel and Stan running a racket for the mob and the rest of five-0 trying to bust them. Just so much fun!

Wayfinding by elandrialore
The one where Steve pines for three years and Danny falls slowly and inexorably into love. <-- An au where Steve is a highschool senior and friends with Grace but also has a huge crush on her dad (Danny, obvs), which Danny knows about and he lets Steve down oh so gently but then Steve goes to Annapolis and Danny basically gives him his family and they keep in touch and Danny realizes he loves Steve but of course feels creepy about it and tries to not and it's really quite sweet and lovely.

When All of New York Misses You by leupagus and sutlers
Steve looks thin -- like he looked when they first met, actually, fresh off the plane and jet-lagged, before seventeen months of sneaking Danny’s malasadas had taken the the edge off of all his sharp angles. There’s a ratty duffel lying at his feet and a wicked-looking scar curves over his left bicep, disappearing under the sleeve of his t-shirt, skin still pink and new. <-- Great read. Well paced and really good characterizations.

Rectober Post #2
Wednesdays are for fanvid recs! I am completely in awe of all the amazing vidders out there. These are just a few of my favourite multi fandom vids:

Starships! - bionic

Radioactive - greenie
FANDOM(S): The Maze Runner, The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, Teen Wolf and The 100

Shut Up and Dance (Fandom Compilation) - The Cynical Slayer
FANDOM(S): A lot of them. A.Lot.

Rectober Post #1

So it's Rectober and I thought I'd give my poor little unused livejournal a bit of a work out by joining in and posting some recs. Yay! This will be multi fandom, because that's how I roll, and I'm going to start off with some really random recs. These are fic that I love, but don't really have a place to put. They're fandoms I don't generally read, or that barely even exist, but they're lovely and I love them and I hope you will too. :)

Reasons to Shoot a Dog by out_there - Eggsy/Harry; 14061; G

Summary: Where rumours of Harry's death have been greatly exaggerated, Merlin doesn't know if he's Arthur or Martha (and prefers to be neither), and every agent has his own justification for the dog test. Also, Harry is not dithering over his attraction to Eggsy (no matter what Merlin claims).

My Thoughts: Ok, this isn't exactly an obscure fandom, but it's not one I'm reading in at the moment. Mostly because I know that if I start I'm going to get sucked right on in and it will be six months before I come up for air and I just don't have the time for those kinds of feelings right now. I have read this one, however, and it is all kinds of lovely. A fantastic get together fic with some gorgeous characterizations. Harry's lovely. Eggsy's lovely. Martha is the loveliest. So very sweet.

Teen Wolf
kyle wei, tree whisperer by magneticwave - Harley; gen; 6,589; G

Summary: Harley has known Kyle Wei basically forever, just like everybody else born and bred in Beacon Hills, but she’d say that their friendship really begins the morning that Kyle comes by the BHHS newspaper office to ask Harley to help him save his tree girlfriend from Lydia Martin’s patio.

My Thoughts: Ok, again, not exactly an obscure fandom, but this kick ass story sits a bit to the left of the fandom as it's about the Beacon Hills High students who aren't Scott, Stiles, Lydia and their besties. Outsider pov is one of my favourite things. When it's well done it can give the reader so much extra insight into their favourite pairing, strengthen the established world by building on to it, poke fun at some of the more irritating plot holes and just generally enhance the fandom experience This one is outstanding. Harley, a side character from episode one, is a fantastic, fully developed, well drawn character, the tone is really great, funny and engaging and the whole story makes me wish the shows writers could take a class from fandom writers.

MI 4
That Light That Takes You Home by torakowalski - Benji/Brandt; 9,816; T+

Summary: In which Benji Dunn has a meet-cute on an aeroplane, falls in love, qualifies as a field agent, and nearly gets blown up far too many times.

My Thoughts: In which Benji and Will are kind of quietly in love and it's very sweet. I had no idea I shipped this pairing until I read this story. Now I just want ALL the Benji and Will.

Harry Potter
ugly; in defense of pansy parkinson by dirgewithoutmusic - Pansy; T+

Summary: “Why are you here?” Parvati asked Pansy once. People asked her a lot, when they found her in Flourish and Blotts, or at work on the Prophet. Their eyes raked her, looking for green, for silver, for venom. Sometimes she'd smile back and let them see the danger. "Because I'm not fifteen anymore," said Pansy. "God, do you know what precious Potter Sr. got up to at school, the bully? But boys get to grow up to be men, you see, and us girls just grow up to be bitches."

My Thoughts: All I can say is I adore Pansy and this seems so sharply perfect.

Apocalypse Cow, or How Lucius Malfoy Saved the World from Inferii by Ellen Smithee, rillalicious - Hermione/Lucius; 13,579; T+

Summary: Lucius's life isn't turning out quite like he expected. His wife has left him for a younger man, his best friend has accidentally unleashed unspeakable evil upon the world, and he just can't seem to escape his past in Azkaban. Little does he know that when he gets the Ministry involved, it's about to get a whole lot worse, and maybe just a little bit better, too.

My Thoughts: I know, ok, I know. But it's SO FUNNY! So, so funny. The pairing is pretty crack but it all makes sense and the characterization of Lucius is brilliant!

The Lucky Ones by victoria_p (musefool) - Diana Prince/Steve Rogers; 1,767; T+

Summary: He's tall and broad and wears a star upon his chest, the same as the one on his shield, the same as the ones on her uniform.

My Thoughts: So, this is a crossover DCU/MCU and it works! This is absolutely the relationship these two deserve. <3

This is my home (I have no other) by Ischa - John Blake/Dick Grayson; 13,457; M

Summary: In which Dick is universe displaced and falls in love with John.

My Thoughts: While I can't speak to the charcterization of Dick, as DCU/DC comic 'verse are not my normal stomping grounds, I found him to be beautifully engaging and satisfyingly angsty. The story is interesting and definitely more than a bit lovely. Dick from the comic's verse finds himself in Nolan's TDKR verse post movie and falls in love.

Calvin and Hobbes
Hello Operator, Please Give Me Number Nine by Starlingthefool - Suzy and Death; Gen; 3,066; T+

Summary: The lesson here, Susie thinks, is that tricking Death is tricky business. How do you outwit the personification of oblivion? Chess, obviously, won’t be the answer.
Or: Susie plays Calvinball with Death.

My Thoughts: Suzy goes up against death and it's all really just a metaphor for letting go of childhood but isn't it lovely. <3

Parks and Rec
I've been waiting up all night by rustykitchenscissors - Andy/April/Ben; 14,721; M

Summary: Aliens may or may not be invading Pawnee and April and Andy have taken to sleeping in Ben's bed.

My Thoughts: A sweet and unexpected surprise. The characterizations feel spot on. I really, really, genuinely love this fic. <3

Despicable Me/The Incredibles
The Best Time of Your Life by Cinaed - Margo/Violet Parr; 1,792; G

Summary: Violet approaches freshman year of college with a mixture of anticipation and dread. The dread's mostly gone once she meets Margo.

My Thoughts: So this is basically the best thing ever. Lovely, sweet and such a perfect pairing! <3

One Night Only by merelyn, rageprufrock, twentysomething - Seth/Stefon; 2,639; M

Summary: So basically when the NYPD calls Stefon on a Tuesday at 2 a.m. he think's it's Sergeant O'Gay-dy finally coming through on that super exclusive invite to that underground thing that Stefon is totally ready for. He's already bought candles and stretched.

My Thoughts: Please excuse me. I'll be over here dying of laughter.

Darcy Lewis Fic Rec List

7A WF 83429 by musefool

Summary: In the box where it says, "If you do not have a significant other at the time of the biochemical event, to whom do you grant consent to have sex with you should circumstances require it?" Darcy writes, "Captain America." Because that's a thing that's ever going to happen. <-- A fun little sex pollen fic.

A Fighter by Trade by Imogen_Penn

Summary: Everybody’s got a past, something they’re running from. It might take a while to figure it out, but the real question is where you’re running to. <-- The one where they meet at a boxing club and Steve just wants to be Steve and Darcy doesn't want to fall in love with a soldier and things are hard until they're not. Quite nice.

A Space Between by enigma_eggroll

Summary: A man out of time and a woman out of place, they find their way forward in an uncertain world. <--Kind of quiet and sweet with a nicely paced development of their relationship.

All the Dead Lie Down by Imogen_Penn

Summary: Sooooo....I wrote a zombie epic. I don't even know guys. It just happened. Blame slash insane gratitude to Katertots and nessismore for chearleading, support and keeping the spoilers to themselves :) <-- ZOMBIE FIC!!! BE STILL MY HEART!!!! (My ridiculous bias towards apocafic/zombie fic aside, this is a really well told story with some great characterization and really great pacing. Just be aware that this is zombie fic, so not everyone is going to make it through.)

Break the Ice by fade_like_starlight

Summary: After Steve is photographed at a publicity event with a woman who is 'almost' wearing a dress, Fury demands that Coulson fix it. Rather than shutting down the entire tabloid magazine industry (which really is outside SHIELD's parameters), Coulson takes a different approach and decides to find a girlfriend for the Captain. <-- Super cute fake!boyfriend fic.

Darcy Lewis Can't Lose by eLJay

Summary: Darcy wants to do something nice for Steve. <-- Lovely little series that has excellent characterizations and a beautiful tone. The stories are gentle without being too soft and sweet without being sappy.

De'oum Luminai by boombangbing

Summary: When a fare crashes through the roof of Darcy's cab, she gets more than she bargained for. <-- Fifth Element fusion! Wee!

Five Things Darcy Loves About Working For SHIELD by teand

Summary: The Bronx was up, the Battery was down and thank freaking Thor that SHIELD provided housing or Darcy suspected she wouldn't have been able to afford to live closer than Vermont. <-- Darcy/Steve 5 times fic? Be still my beating heart! I want more! Also, Clint/Coulson are almost unbearably adorable. All my love for this.

I Climbed The Tree To See The World by sarcastic_fina

Summary: The path to self-discovery, including becoming Coulson's assistant-slash-liaison-slash-bff, Captain America's lady love, and rating fourth on the SHIELD BAMF scale, was like the yellow brick road; it was chaos and confusion around every bend. <-- All kinds of awesome.

Kid's Movies by CircusBones

Summary: While moving to New York, Darcy Lewis finds a sketch of a certain hero, pre-serum, and a long, convoluted adventure involving movies, super villains, falling in love, and becoming a competent SHIELD agent begins. Rating is mostly for language. And some blood. And some love. <-- All kinds of lovely.

Robot Pants-Off Dance-Off by Lallybroch

Summary: Tony's not surprised Cap is the only one of them who had gotten a dose of the red stuff--he'd been in the middle of everything, as per usual--saving civilians and agents and kicking robot ass for the Free World. He's a little more surprised to discover that Darcy had been one of those agents. And by the time they're all stuck in the elevator together--Steve and Darcy pressed together in one corner, everybody else in the other—it doesn’t take long to figure out why the stupid villain they’d been fighting had stopped to fondle one of his bots. <-- DARCY/STEVE SEX POLLEN!!!!!!! What more needs to be said, really? (although, actually, the real charm is in how it manages to be both very sweet and insanely hot at the same time.)

Rule Number Nine by DevilDoll

Summary: "Darcy was right, Steve admits to himself later that day. He never has a date for anything." In which Steve and Darcy go on Not Dates and more. <-- In which Steve and Darcy are fuck buddies and it's delightful.

Turn Off Trouble Like You Turn Off a Light by blithers

Summary: "Oh, God," he said, and she knew just enough about Captain America to find this a pretty strongly worded statement on the situation. (Or, Steve and Darcy wake up married in Vegas.) <-- Very cute with a satisfying ending.

and I wonder (if everything could ever feel this real forever) by sarcastic_fina

Summary: Steve tells him that Darcy's harmless. Bucky imagines, on paper, Darcy is harmless. HYDRA wouldn't give her a second glance. But he does. He can barely keep his eyes off her. He's not sure he wants to. <--Gorgeous get-together fic complete with sarcastic Darcy and a beautifully fragile-but-healing Bucky.

Fenestration and the Art of Self Defense by Airwyn

Summary: In which Darcy Lewis catsits for Captain America and Bucky Barnes doesn't use the front door. <-- Darcy and Bucky are bros and it is everything!

I once started out to walk around the world but ended up in Brooklyn by suzuki

Summary: “Who the hell is the Winter Soldier?” Darcy asks doubtfully, cocking her head. <-- Spectacular crack. I adore this one.

Metallurgy by thegirlgrey

Summary: Bucky finds his footing as an Avenger with Darcy's help. <-- Technically this is Clint/Darcy but the main thrust of the story is Bucky and Darcy's friendship. Bucky and Darcy are bros and it is glorious. I love fic where members of the opposite sex are best friends without any kind of sexual tension and Avengers, in particular as a fandom, seems to excel at that.

That Which You Seek by Wynn

Summary: A few days after Bucky discovers his true identity, Darcy encounters him in a diner 50 miles outside of D.C. having apparently transformed from a handsome long-dead war hero into a creepy, scruffy, pancake-hating serial killer. So of course she tries to help him. <-- An engaging read.

we are not history yet; we are happening now by suzukiblu

Summary: From fourteen to sixteen, she hadn’t had words at all. She hadn’t told anyone. She’d known if she had, they would never come back. <-- It seems like everyone and their sister is writing soul bond fic in this fandom right now and I love it!

Some Nights by Jadzia_Bear

Summary: When two of Darcy's closest friends fall in love she does everything she can to get them together. By the time she realises she has feelings of her own, things have already gone too far. <-- Darcy makes things unnecessarily complicated but luckily Steve and Bucky know how to use their words.

Rule of Three by cylobaby27

Summary: Darcy has imagined her soulmates a million times. Her plan for their first meeting is to punch them in the face with all her might. Her first soulmark-- “Well, at least she’s got a nice rack”-- has been plaguing her since she was born, fueling every self-conscious fear she had ever had. The second, which had only appeared a few years back, is equally as insulting. At least at that point she was a little too focused on the aliens streaming from the sky to really concern herself about whatever jerk she was destined to connect with. Who needs soulmates anyway? She just didn’t expect “You've got to be kidding me” to be such a hunk. <-- Soul!bond fic! I just adore these three.

Catch a Falling Star by KittyWings01

Summary: If she was being honest, she hadn’t met anyone worthwhile in quite a long time. It was hard to be interested in any man when she had two super hot super soldiers at home to compare them to. And not just super hot, but also good men. They were her darkness and her light, her best friends, her protectors, her whole world. Damn, she was screwed. <-- OT3!!! <3

Bad Boys Ravish Only Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly by waketosleep

Summary: An account of how Darcy Lewis and Clint Barton got it together in the midst of the Avengers. <-- As with anything featuring Darcy, this is pretty much win.

Gift of Asylum by carleton97 and sister_wolf

Summary: The story of how Darcy Lewis accidentally helps found the Avengers while having an epic, failboaty romance with that dude she nailed in a bar two years ago. Tasers, jackbooted thugs, Tony Stark, and life-altering job offers are par for the course when you help discover an alien/god dude with amazing pecs. <-- Great story. Lots of fun.

Having a Bit of a Day Here by kellifer_fic

Summary: Where Darcy gets a super power, kind of, sorta. Geez, she's just having a bit of a weird week, alright? <-- One of my all time favourites!

Rivers and Roads by Imogen_Penn

Summary: It’s been three years, all told, that they’ve been in Puente Antiguo, shouting at the stars. <-- In which Darcy moves in to Clint's building. Quite lovely with a slow burn.

the best of life is but intoxication by kellifer_fic

Summary: Where Steve and Darcy are platonic BFFs and Tony and Clint just aren't buying it. <-- I love this as much for the Darcy and Steve interaction as I do for the Clint/Darcy. Funny and more than a bit charming.

The Only John Wayne Left in This Town by gyzym

Summary: Clint's got a secret love, and it's spelled b-a-n-j-o. <-- OK, this is really a very Clint-centric story but it the first fic I read with Darcy s a romantic and interest and it holds a special place in my heart. Also, it is legitimately lovely.

you need a rock not a rolling stone by topaz

Summary: The first time Darcy gets kidnapped by a mad scientist, it is not her fault. <-- Fantastic relationship fic with just the right blend of action and humour. Darcy is a sincerely well rounded character in this, which is a delight to read. Also, there's a fair bit of Darcy/Steve bffness, so extra bonus points there.

Times Like These by Imogen_Penn

Summary: No one had ever intentionally hurt her before in her whole life. No one had ever raised a hand against her in violence. The fear of it and the inability to control the situation was just as bad as the pain itself. And it pissed her the fuck off. <-- Nicely involved, well developed fic.

Manic Mondays by coffeebuddha

Summary: Darcy was seven the first time she fell in love. The second time it happens, she's twenty-five, hung over as all get out, and has a real chance of getting shot, which is actually more alarming than the giant green guy who's holding her hostage. <-- Lovely.

she blinded me with political science by thingswithteeth

Summary: Darcy watched the Avengers defend New York from over two thousand miles away. She could look out her window if she wanted to watch the aftermath. She watches the news instead, and realizes one very important thing: the Avengers have a bit of a PR problem. <-- Really completely awesome.

silver cities rise by endquestionmark

Summary: “Hey,” Darcy protests, “I am so low-stress!” She isn’t. It’s total bullshit. But there’s no way she’s letting Agent Suit trash-talk her. “I am like wheatgrass smoothies and Zen tapes and Xanax in one handy social science-wrapped package.” <-- Utterly adorable.

where the air is rarified by Siria

Summary: When Sam met Darcy. <-- Delightful. I am ready for more of this pairing in my life!

We'll Run Like We're Totally Awesome by themonkeycabal

Summary: Darcy's not quite sure what she'll do with another dad. <-- In which Darcy is actually Tony Stark's daughter and it is the best. thing. ever. This is a 12 part ongoing series that follows along with the MCU and is just a ton of fun. Completely addictive.

Trope Bingo. Again.
Ok. I'm trying this again. And this time I will actually post something. I will.

Clint/Coulson Primer for sapphirescribe
So sapphirescribe mentioned that she might want to try reading some Clint/Coulson to which I promptly clubbed her over the head and dragged her into the fandom. I've put together a little primer to help ease the way.

This is Phil Coulson:
Phil Coulson
Phil Coulson has the distinction of being of being one of the few recurring characters created for the Marvel cinematic universe. His first appearance was in Iron Man followed by Iron Man 2 before his role was significantly expanded for Thor and The Avengers. He was the lead in two short film DVD extras and has had his character written into the comic book universe. And now, of course, Coulson is the main character in Joss Whedon's newest series, Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But forget all that. What you really need to know is that Phil Coulson is the coolest of the cool, unassuming and measured, he meets challenges from pouty superheroes to world level threats with the same enigmatic half smile and supreme competence. Unless you mess with his Captain America trading cards. Don't mess with his trading cards.

Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, aka omghisarmshowaretheyreal:
Clint Barton
According to comic lore, Clint Barton was the youngest child of an abusive, alcoholic father who killed himself and Clint's mother in a car accident leaving Clint and his brother Barney orphaned and wards of the State. After a few years with social services, the Barton brothers ran away to join the circus. Clint was mentored by The Swordsman and then Trick-Shot, neither of whom were good people, and subsequently abandoned to his fate by Barney and Trick-Shot who had become partners in crime. This is the point where canon and fandom diverge but general consensus in fanon is that Clint joins SHIELD, acquires Coulson as a handler, then Natasha as his partner. Clint and Coulson share about 2 minutes of screen time in Thor, so obviously they're soulmates and destined to be together.

Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow:
Natasha Romanoff
Natasha Romanoff is SHIELD's premiere super-ninja-spy-assassin and Clint's partner and BFF. Independently they're deadly. Together they could burn the world down. Coulson is generally portrayed as their handler and the stabilizing influence necessary to make their little troika work. Fanon tends to have them relating on a level of codependence that is, frankly, a bit terrifying but also completely and totally awesome! Natasha's backstory has her portrayed as the most functional product of a Russian Super Soldier program that obtained her as a child and conditioned her into a deadly assassin. Eventually she went rogue until crossing paths with Clint, who pulled her into SHIELD.

Nick Fury:
Nick Fury
Supreme leader and resident badass. Enough said.

Maria Hill:
Maria Hill
Maria Hill is Fury's second in military operations. She is dedicated, loyal and extremely proficient. It's not entirely clear where she and Coulson fall in SHIELD hierarchy, who takes precedence over who, but the appear to be each others counterparts, with Maria relying on a more procedural military background and Phil favouring a flexible attitude in getting results.

Jasper Sitwell:
Jasper Sitwell
Jasper Sitwell first appears in Thor as Coulson's second in command. He makes a brief appearance in The Avengers and is billed to play some kind of supporting role in Thor 2. Additionally, he appears alongside Coulson in the short DVD extra feature "The Consultant". Sitwell shows up in a large number of SHIELD fic, to deliver snark and generally being awesome.

Darcy Lewis:
Darcy Lewis
Like Coulson, Darcy Lewis is an original character to the Marvel movie universe. She first appears in Thor as Jane Foster's assistant (Jane is Thor's physicist girlfriend), where she tazes Thor, introduces him to coffee, creates a fake id for him, and assists in causing some minor mayhem, frustrating Coulson and endearing her forever to the fandom. The fandom loves her and she often shows up in fic as Coulson's assistant/minion post Avengers. She's sassy and snarky and blatantly ogles superheroes. She is us.

Why I love them:
Clint and Coulson
I have a kink for competent men a mile wide and these two fit the bill. Coulson's background is wide open to interpretation which makes for some fun origin stories, and Clint's background lends itself well to emotional complexities that the fandom authors exploit beautifully. Add to that the nature of their profession and you get some beautiful hurt/comfort of the "hard men being soft" variety that I am crazy for. Honestly, what's not to love?

Fic Recs

Short Films
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer <--immediately precedes Thor and showcases "Coulson's complete BAMFery.
The Consultant <--post Thor and pre Avengers, works to tie The Incredible Hulk into Marvel's Phase One.

A list of Clint/Coulson recs for sapphirescribe, separated by category/genre. Because I'm a bit anal that way. :)

SHIELD Origin Stories:
Hope is Not a Course of Action by thatdamneddame (12572 words)
Summary: Clint loved Natasha like he loved a lot of stupid ideas.
My thoughts: The story of how Clint comes to work for SHIELD. This is a really lovely story with a fantastically inscrutable Phil and a snarky, intelligent Clint. Really good and a nice starting off point if you're new to the fandom.

Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet by sirona (18747)
Summary: "That little shit," Jasper snarls, throwing himself in the seat across from Phil in the mess hall, glasses slightly askew and eyes sporting that look Phil has come to associate with a certain specialist recently collected into SHIELD's fold.
My thoughts: Lovely history of Coulson and Clint that includes a "fix-it" and an awesome Sitwell.

*Catch Your Voice by lavvyan (14180 words)
Summary: Clint keeps telling himself he's not obsessed with Coulson. From the way Natasha keeps laughing at him, she's not buying it either. But it's only a crush if you know what the other guy actually looks like, right?
My thoughts: Fantastic Clint/Coulson origin story complete with fix-it. And donuts. I adore Clint's voice in this and Coulson is ridiculously enigmatic. This one is easily one of my favourites.

still officially lost (part one of the early years 'verse) by pollyrepeat (11913 words)
Summary: “Barton has clearly imprinted on you,” Fury starts, and keeps talking right over Phil’s knee-jerk, horrified, “He has not,” to seal Phil’s doom by saying, “so I’ve decided that you’re going to take primary responsibility for him from now on.” “Oh, god,” Phil says, faintly, before he can stop himself.
Otherwise known as, SHIELD: The Early Years.
My thoughts: Coulson's a junior agent assigned to wrangling a 17 year old Clint. Characterizations are great as they each begin to come into their own. Now with awesome getting-together sequel!

* Talk To Me by laceymcbain (11738 words)
Summary: The first words Clint ever remembers Coulson saying to him are "talk to me."
My Thoughts: Hello fic of my heart. Lots of BAMFY goodness paired with all the feelings...so, so good. I've read this one more times than I can count.

Get-together Fic
The Best Laid Plans of Friends by Selenay (5424 words)
Summary: Phil and Clint have been going on mission dates for years without working out they were dating. Their friends decide to buy them a clue. This process may be harder than anyone anticipated...
My Thoughts: Very cute. They're both so completely oblivious, it's adorable!

But I Will Hold on Hope (And I Won't Let You Choke) by perpetfic (14875 words)
Summary: In which Clint is not the emotionally stunted one, plays pretty well with others, and Sitwell is a foul-mouthed matchmaker against his will.
My Thoughts: Really lovely fic with an outstanding Sitwell and some fun OC's. Coulson is so reluctant even though they're both so obviously crazy for each other that it's painful. All the feelings for this one.

I've Got Your Words in Me by eleanor_lavish (5133 words)
Summary: Clint doesn’t fuck up assignments very often. This time, he’s pretty glad he did.
My Thoughts: Cute and steamy. A good read despite the ridiculously contrived plot device in the middle which the author impressively manages to make work for her.

And I'll Cross Oceans Like Never Before by sirona (16856 words)
Summary: 'Oh, hell no,' he thinks, looking down at his hands only to be met with furry paws instead of the fingers he expects.
--Or the one where Loki turns Clint into a puppy, and his new condition allows him to gain some startling insights into their resident babysitter agent.
My Thoughts: PUPPY FIC!!!!! *SWOONS*

Be Calm, Look Cute by pollyrepeat (18831 words)
Summary: “It's a contingency plan in case of accidental teenagering,” says Stark.
My Thoughts: Coulson is hit by a de-aging ray and becomes his 16 year old self. Coulson is lovely, he's quiet and dorky and very self aware in a way that makes him supremely loveable and the resulting love story plays out really well.

Bicycle Made for Two by sirona (8139 words)
Summary: Pretending to be Phil Coulson's husband, when all you want in the world is not to have to pretend, is the single worst experience of Clint's life.
My Thoughts: Pretend boyfriends trope. Pining!Clint is a bit awesome.

Kissing Under the Mistletoe (and Other Christmassy Activities) by Selenay (13600 words)
Summary: "How hard could it be to pretend for a few days?" Clint continued. "All those kids around, we'd be able to keep it strictly PG and your sister would never have to know. It'll be great."
My Thoughts: Pretend!Boyfriend trope is the bestest trope!

Slow Growth Investment by Arsenic ( 37837 words)
Summary: Left at the hospital, injured and penniless, Clint tries to find his way to another circus, or some other means of supporting himself, but makes a few decisions that end up costing him. He's pretty much given up on ever making something of his life when he's in the wrong place at the wrong time, witness to an assassination. As it turns out, that's the best luck he's had in years.
My Thoughts: Pre canon story about Clint being recruited and his developing relationships with Natasha and Coulson. Lovely. The relationship between Clint and Natasha really shines. Warning for excessive non con at the beginning. Also, this is an OT3 fic.

Fix-it Fic
I am Ready, I am Fine by sirona (1270 words)
Summary: Post-Avengers OT3 Fix-it fic.
My Thoughts: H/C fix-it fic. Lovely, lovely, lovely.

Like Sick Flowers Need the Sun by hoosierbitch (7851 words)
Summary: Clint hasn't felt this alone in a long time. Coulson's gone, SHIELD isn't a home anymore, and no one on his new team seems to like him. After a lifetime of being ignored, Clint's gotten good at demanding attention. He'll annoy and frustrate and piss everyone off until they notice him. To him, any attention—even the negative kind—is good attention. This poses a problem when they all finally learn to just ignore him.
My Thoughts: Lovely and subtle in a way I highly enjoyed. Clint's characterization is a bit different in this then in most fic but she manages his inability to connect really well without over dramatizing it.

Never Sold a Lie by nerdwegian (7255 words)
Summary: "The Life Model Decoys are designed with a self-sustaining Artificial Intelligence, with the project goal being for them to be able to pass as their Target Model in any given situation." Road trip fic. Obviously.
My Thoughts: Fix-it with Clint convinced that Phil is a LMD. Lovely road trip fic. Lots of feelings and stuff. Heart clenchy. I loved it.

Office Scuttlebutt is Always Wrong (Except When It Isn't) by Ralkana (1409 words)
Summary: Five rumors about Phil Coulson (and one truth).
My Thoughts: Five time and a fix-it fic? I think we all know how I feel about this. Really lovely look at Phil Coulson.

Some People Just Collect Stamps by Closer (9446 words)
Summary: Phil Coulson wakes up in a hospital bed. Well, damn.
My Thoughts: Awesome "fix-it" fic with all the feelings! Loved this.

With This Ring by cherryfeather (3170 words)
Summary: Clint's not one for sympathy leave--he's not one for leave at all, unless it's the enforced kind. The kind you get from punching the director of SHIELD in the face. That had calmed him down.
My Thoughts: Really nice fix-it fic. Short and very sweet.

You're the One That I Like Best by sirona (7151 words)
Summary: Clint tries to come to terms with Coulson's death. He.... mostly fails. Fortunately, Coulson's house plants kind of help.
My Thoughts: It should be kind of obvious by now that I have a stupid amount of love for sirona's fic. This one is just all kinds of lovely. Heartachey in all the best ways. P.S. You should just go read all of her stuff.

Team Building Fic
10,9,8, car... by pollyrepeat (9470 words)
Summary: Clint was pretty sure he'd seen this movie. Like a lot of things since he'd joined the Avengers, it had been a lot funnier when it wasn't his life.
My Thoughts: All of the feelings in this one. All of them. This is Groundhog Day trope, and it's heartbreaking and lovely and one of my favourites.

Down From the Bird's Eye View by BlackEyedGirl (4642 words)
Summary: Clint has difficulty adjusting to people he has to deal with at ground level.
My Thoughts: Lovely and subtle fic about Clint struggling to fit in with the initiative.

The Time to Find a Place to Land by BlackEyedGirl (20178 words)
Summary: By Phil’s count, this is his third attempt at bringing the Avengers together, although he will admit his participation in the second attempt was more symbolic than anything else. He hadn’t expected Stark to be the easiest sell, or Barton to be the most problematic, but things have changed since he’s been away.
My Thoughts: Takes its time dealing with the fall out of Phil's "death". Bonus points for an excellent use of Darcy.

Survivor's Guilt by Arsenic (7034 words)
Summary: In the wake of Loki, Clint is persona-non-grata at SHIELD.
My Thoughts: Really lovely. Deals with Clint's issues after the attack on the helicarrier and the team coming together to help him through. AND it's a fix-it.

A little bit of your taste (in my mouth) by ellievolia and sirona (20299 words)
Summary: Coffee Shop AU. In which Clint owns the coffee shop that makes the best damn coffee Phil has ever tasted, and things only go downhill from there.
My Thoughts: Sweet and lovely.

call me maybe by foxxcub (2889 words)
Summary: One time with his best friend on prom night after a little too much booze wasn’t really experience, but details weren’t important. He’d had sex, period.
My Thoughts: Super cute HS au that is a sort of sequel to listedheart's kisses on the necks of best friends but you don't need to read that to understand this.

The Only Hope For Me Is You by foxxcub (11650 words)
Summary: Of course Phil would get into Harvard; he was the valedictorian, student body president, honor society treasurer—it would’ve been a damn miracle if he hadn’t gotten in. In the meantime, Clint had two years of high school left, and Phil was just going to be...gone.
My Thoughts: Sweet and lovely HS AU.

The Loner and the Lighthouse Man by SidneySussex (2343 words)
Summary: Deep-sea fishing AU. Phil Coulson is the best fisherman on the North Atlantic. He works alone and likes it that way, but sometimes even he feels the need to pick up the radio and hear another human voice.
My Thoughts: Quiet and lovely and sweet.

Blue Plate Special by Saone (5963 words)
Summary: Take one ex-circus performer, one homicide detective, a dash of meddling cohorts, a heavy helping of pie recipes, mix well, and bake until somebody gets a date.
My Thoughts: Super cute diner!au. Squee!

I will ask you to open my door from your side by ellievolia and sirona (21194 words)
Summary: Phil's car is firetruck red, and she's his pride and joy. She deserves the very best of care, something Phil can't give her by himself -- he's the CFO of Stark Industries, not the experienced mechanic she needs. This is a project that needs outsourcing -- straight to Steve Rogers' garage and its preternaturally gifted restorer, Clint Barton.
My Thoughts: For the Avengers BB. Nice characterizations and tatooed Phil is yum. This also contains Pepper/Phil and deals with the break up of their long term relationship.

These Things Happen by lavvyan (3471 words)
Summary: The Opera Ghost takes an interest in young tenor Steve Rogers. Clint isn't jealous. At all. Phantom of the Opera AU
My Thoughts: So much love for this. Short but manages to convey everything you need from it.

Hot and Steamy
it's in the water, baby by sirona (3550 words)
Summary: Clint's friends drag him to a classy bar on their quest to find sugar daddies for themselves. Clint isn't inclined to play that game -- until he meets Phil Coulson, who challenges everything Clint believed in.
My Thoughts: Daddy kink and age gap fic in which Clint and Phil are both very sweet and it is kind of incredibly hot.

Principled by herinfiniteeyes (2856 words)
Summary: In which Clint isn't willing to give up without a fight to get what he wants from Principal Coulson.
My Thoughts: Warnings for underage, age gap and references to non-con. I like the dynamic between Clint and Coulson in this and the sequel written by sirona is very emotionally satisfying so make sure to read that as well.

Won't You Please (Leave Your Mark On Me) by torakowalski (19945 words)
Summary: Clint really likes handcuffs; he’s just not sure how to tell Phil that. Which is a problem since they’ve been sleeping together for a few months now.
My Thoughts: Nicely involved dom/sub fic.

The Things You Need to Know by lavvyan (3114 words)
Summary: In which Clint has what he asked for but it isn't what he wants. Luckily, there is such thing as renegotiation, even if they go about it in all the wrong ways.
My Thoughts: Well done dom/sub, bondage fic.

Touched for the Very First Time by listedheart (5094 words)
Summary: Clint Barton: secretly a virgin. This was not in his file.
My Thoughts: Yah he is. Hot, hot, hot first time fic.

I'll just keep following (the heartlines in your hand) by bendingwind (10542 words)
Summary: A love story told through mission sex.
My Thoughts: Lovely.

Been Looking At You Forever by torakowalski (18881 words)
Summary: Clint and Phil are friends. Friends who have sex. That’s all there is to it. Honestly.
My Thoughts: Fuckbuddies fic. I adored it. Great team moments and just lovely all around.

Long Fic
Words May Fail (The Body Remains) by ladyflowdi (56474 words)
Summary: There's a beginning to every love story, Clint knows. Theirs just has more bullets and crazy people.
My Thoughts: Best! <3

Watch and Learn by TamrynEradani (82090 words)
Summary: When Clint is a boy he learns to keep out of sight, how to read situations, and how to put others before himself. When Clint is a young man, he gets shot by Agent Phil Coulson, and he learns to put those skills to use.
My Thoughts: Long and involved. All the love. <3

Through the Glass by dentalfloss (70417 words)
Summary: “Thoughts Coulson?” Fury asked, finger tapping idly on Barton’s file.
“He’s dangerous. He has trust issues that we may not be able to breach, he will not like working with others, he will lie to us about his motivations every chance he gets and, most likely, be successful every time.” Coulson’s gaze drifted back to the empty chair Barton had chosen earlier, boxed in the corner yet protected on as many sides as possible. “It won’t be easy, but if we can win his loyalty he has the potential to be the asset we’re looking for.”
Fury agreed, though neither of them would ever dream that they already had Barton’s loyalty, or that the price it cost was so steep.
My Thoughts: An unscrupulous baby agent tests an untried and unknown brainwashing tech on Clint in order to bring him into SHIELD. Nobody knows and Clint is ordered never to reveal that he's under duress and that his loyalty isn't his own choosing. The story follows Clint's career at SHIELD and into his time as an Avenger. I really liked it. Lots of feels and no shrinking back from the issues it raises.

Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge: A Passage to India
reading is sexy
For the first book in the RGRC, V and I chose E.M. Forster's A Passage to India, primarily because it was convenient (we each had copies that were easily accessible). It didn't hurt that we were both familiar with Forster's writing and knew that at the very least we'd get to read some beautiful passages, vivid language and wry characterizations.

There is so much to explore in this book that I feel awfully unequal to the task. It left me wishing I understood colonial India better, that I knew the history of its deterioration beyond Ghandi, that I was better versed in Islam and Hinduism and that I was more familiar with E.M. Forster beyond his writing so that I could really fully appreciate the nuances that I know were there. I enjoyed the outsider perspective and I feel like Forster was probably uniquely positioned to write it. No one character was without fault or foibles and I loved how Forster played that up. I was left feeling one could never experience "the real India" because the country was so coloured by the ever changing people within it.

I was also struck by all the division within the book - division between caste, between religion, gender, age, nationality - this is a book that is a sharp construct of lines and it's when characters attempt to blur those lines that problems/conflict happens. Even the most sympathetic character, Fielding, never manages to completely successfully navigate these divisions. It's dismayingly topical, dismaying because nothing much seems to have fundamentally changed over the past 90 years or so. But it is an interesting and provocative look at human nature. All in all a good way to start the challenge. Next up: George Orwell's dystopia, 1984. This one should be right up V's alley. :)

The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge
So I don't know if it was the heat or maybe just some kind of extreme level of optimism on my part, but somehow I have found myself agreeing to join the lovely le_rameau in taking part in The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge. At our predicted rate of 2 books/month the challenge should take us fourteen years to complete. Fourteen years of talking about books with a good friend? Sounds like a pretty good thing to me. I'm hoping to post notes about the books as I read them and if anyone is interested you can check out out progress here.

Wish us luck!
